The War of Art by Steve Pressfield is probably the greatest book ever written. Actually it’s not. Probably not even close, but we at Life Sausage really like it. I read it three times. I think you should read it too at least twice. But don’t worry, you’ll be able to read it in one or two sittings.
The subtitle is Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles. That about sums up what the book is trying to help us with. It’s easy to read the book quickly, but the content will kick your ass in a good way. Not feeling motivated to try something new? This book will probably inspire you.
I tried to find out how many copies have been sold but couldn’t. I’ll bet it’s more than 100,000 and less than 5 billion (the number of Bibles that have supposedly been sold).
I did see there are nearly 1,900 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of 4.5 (out of 5). Around 72% gave it 5 stars and 15% gave it four. That leaves 13% who gave three stars or less. That got me wondering what the idiots who left one star ratings had to say.
Here’s one: “I knew your mom and she wasn’t sure who your father was.”
That’s not really a rating comment. I made it up.
But here’s an actual excerpt from a one star rating:
“I think God wants to share in the joy we feel as we do the one OR MORE things that bring joy to ourselves and others, not in the act of writing a book. I think God is just as happy when I share a moment in peace and joy as I pet my cat (whose drooling and purring shows she’s pretty happy, too).”
Seriously, this is from an actual review on Amazon’s website.
I kinda wish I read that before I read the book, but what’s done is done. I liked the book and thought it was extremely helpful. I bought several copies and to keep on my desk for people I think could benefit from it. But if they have a cat, I don’t give them one.
The entire book is a one good quote after another, but here’s a couple good ones:
I hope you buy the book and read it because there is an 87% chance you’ll really like it.
